Aller Dorset
Nestled in the heart of the Dorset countryside are four unique Shepherd huts which are decorated in a quintessentially English meets playful modernity style. The creative venture of Cat and Ant Earp, Aller Dorset comprises four shepherd huts located on their expanse of farmland, providing a one of a kind accommodation that captures the essence of a British countryside holiday.
Starting with the exteriors, a unique feature is the outdoor bathroom areas, where guests can experience the wonder of bathing under the stars. Two of the outdoor bathrooms cubicles have a playful design style, with colourful encaustic cement tiles applied in a checkerboard pattern across the walls and floor. The tiles make a huge impact on the space, they are handmade using traditional techniques and offer a rustic charm, with a subtle textural finish and a matt look. The Kittyland cabin outdoor bathroom has a Burgundy and Dirty White checker pattern, whilst the Zouland cabin has Mustard and Dirty White, creating two different visual identities with a shared design story. Each has an accompanying colourful bathtub and traditional hardware with a yellow gold standing shower and faucets.
“I’ve always had a thing for checkerboard, whether consciously or subconsciously, it’s a pattern I’ve always been drawn to.”
The colour story continues into the cabins, with the Zoulands cabin focusing on bright lemon yellow with shades of blue. Navy, teal and soft cornflower tones are sprinkled throughout. Soft furnishings celebrate eclectic patterns with various scale and design styles from brands such as Christopher Farr and Ottoline Devries. The bathroom inside reflects the outside bathing area with the tiled yellow and white checkerboard finish. The checkerboard design style is timeless, embraced by many time periods and cultures across the world, and it can be made to suit individual tastes by choosing bright colours and unique colour combinations. The floor is covered with encaustic cement striped tiles in Mustard Stripes, tying together the classic geometric look. The bathroom is finished with sweet pleated wall lights, a bobbin mirror and yellow gold hardware.
“I knew I wanted each of the huts to have a distinct lead colour, which resulted in having about 20 Farrow & Ball samples pasted all around my house for months!”
Alternatively, in the Kittyland cabin, Cat opted for different shades of red, from deep burgundy to fresh pink, with green accents and a green and white checkerboard bathroom, striped encaustic tiles on the floor in Green Stripes. Each cabin has a unique style and embraces modernity through bold colour choices. With bright, colourful designs and materials, guests are instantly transported to happy places as they embrace the Dorset countryside.
Encaustic cement tiles are a wonderful way to introduce the charm of handcrafted material, made individually from specially hand-cut moulds, each tile looks unique.
