Hok

Step inside the tranquil bathroom of HoK’s Kensington House, designed by HoK Living, a company known for its well situated, design-led vacation rentals. The bathroom exudes ambiance with its chic, minimalist design.

Across the walls and floor is a subtle play of Dirty Pink Stripes tiles, adding a gentle touch of color while maintaining a calming, neutral palette. The centerpiece of the room is the bathtub tiled with the same pink stripes tiles, playfully inviting guests in. The second bathroom features a similar use of stripes and colour, whilst including floor to ceiling White Zellige tiles within a shower cubicle.

Designer Henry Hopcroft talks us through some of the design choices for the project.

What was the initial inspiration of the design scheme of the project?

It stemmed from a desire to create a space that is both timeless and comfortable, with an emphasis on earthy tones. Drawing inspiration from nature, the design integrates elements that evoke a sense of warmth and tranquility, balanced with key design pieces that add visual interest and personality.

How did colour influence the design decisions?

Colour played a crucial role in shaping the design decisions for this project. Earthy soft tones such as Portland Stone and soft greens were chosen to create a serene and inviting atmosphere. We then decided to spice things up by adding the pink striped tiles. These colours not only complement each other but also enhance the natural feel of the space, making it feel harmonious and grounded.

What role did tiles play in building the design scheme?

Tiles served as a foundational element in building the design scheme for the bathrooms. Both bathrooms are at the end of a long landing, so we wanted the bathrooms to have impact when you glance down the landings. To further enhance this, we installed pocket sliding doors so the view of the floor to ceiling tiles could be further appreciated. Then to create a sense of the second bathroom’s own identity, we chose a off-white zellige wall tile to add texture to the space. The tiles played a pivotal role in tying together the earthy colour palette and creating a cohesive look throughout the project.

What qualities do you look for in tiles and other materials when designing a bathroom?

When selecting tiles and materials for a bathroom, we prioritize quality, durability, and aesthetic versatility. Tiles that offer interesting textures and finishes are preferred to add tactile interest. Additionally, we seek materials that are easy to clean and maintain, ensuring longevity and practicality without compromising on style.

The tiled bath is very cool, how did you envision this?

We wanted the bath to be the focal point of the room, with the rainfall shower head positioned directly in the middle of the bath to create a balance in the space. We also opted for a striped shower curtain instead of a glass screen to create texture and further add to the striped tiles. We chose these pink stripes to create a statement piece that draws the eye and adds a touch of eclectic yet timeless charm to the space.

Did you face any challenges when coming up with a bolder bathroom design?

This Kensington house was designed for rentals, so it was important for us to make sure the look was timeless and functional, yet also interesting. Too many rental properties are bland and soulless, so we made the bold decision to choose the pink stripes. We kept the rest of the room design quite minimal and classic, so the tiles can do all the talking.

What kind of mood were you aiming to set with the design?

The design aimed to evoke a sense of fun, but also warmth and a timeless style. We wanted people to see the photos or walk into the bathrooms and instantly have an uplifting feeling. So often bathrooms can be clinical. So we wanted to bring the rest of the mood of the house into the bathrooms, achieved through a harmonious blend of earthy tones, natural textures, and comfortable furnishings.
